Environmental Awards

OUR ENVIRONMENTAL RECOGNITION AND AWARDS

In the past decade alone, Quad/Graphics has been awarded more than 25 major environmental achievement honors, both at state and national levels. Here are some of our most recent awards:

  • Quad is recognized as the first major commercial printer to achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification for an existing manufacturing plant. Our 25-year-old Sussex, Wis., printing plant earned LEED for Existing Buildings certification, Silver rating, from the U.S. Green Building Council in June 2009. With 1.7 million square feet of usable space on a 73-acre site, the facility houses almost 60 pieces of heavy industrial press and finishing equipment, and also serves as our company's corporate headquarters.
  • Quad/Graphics appears on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA's) Top 20 Printers List of the largest green power purchasers in the commercial printing business. Quad/Graphics purchases nearly 3 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of green power annually - the equivalent to avoiding the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions of nearly 400 passenger vehicles per year, or the equivalent of electricity needed to power nearly 300 average American homes annually.
  • Print industry news portal WhatTheyThink selected Quad/Graphics as winner in the Environmental Sustainability and Your Plant category of its first-ever Environmental Innovation Awards. Presented on Earth Day 2009, the awards were billed by WhatTheyThink as "going beyond certification" to recognize companies "making real and concrete contributions to innovation, implementation and communications of environmental solutions."
  • AROW – a non-profit association providing statewide leadership on waste reduction and recycling – presented Quad/Graphics with its 2008 Outstanding Achievement in Recycling Award. The award recognizes, among other things, our solid waste recycling rate of 97.9 percent over the past 10 years and our waste-to-energy program, which turned 109,000 pounds of waste material into electricity in 2008.
  • For our ongoing commitment to protecting the environment and our proactive, socially conscious approach to business decisions, Quad/Graphics was awarded a 2008 Business Friend of the Environment Award from the Wisconsin Environmental Working Group® (WEWG), an affiliate of Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce. The award gives special recognition to our pollution prevention efforts.
  • According to a landmark research study by InfoTrends and Graphic Arts Monthly published in mid-2008, Quad is among the Top 5 print industry brands associated with sustainability. Quad is the only printer named in the study along with Heidelberg, Mohawk Paper, Xerox Corp. and Fujifilm Graphic Systems.
  • Our Martinsburg, W.Va., plant earned the state’s first-ever Governor's Award for Excellence in Industrial Energy Efficiency in recognition of our efforts to save more than $1.3 million in energy costs in 2008. The savings were achieved as a direct result of a steam-related maintenance program we instituted during the year.
  • In 2009, Quad became a four-time recipient of the EPA's SmartWaySM Environmental Excellence Award for accomplishments and leadership in the SmartWaySM Transport Partnership. The award was the result of exceptional efforts to implement innovative technologies and strategies that reduce greenhouse gases and other air emissions from our Duplainville Transport division. In 2008 alone, we prevented the emission of 11,479 tons of carbon dioxide over a fleet with no modifications – which is the equivalent of taking 1,907 passenger cars off the road.
  • Quad received the Going Green Recognition Award as part of the 2007 Wisconsin 75 annual awards program sponsored by the Milwaukee office of Deloitte & Touche USA LLP, a professional services firm that provides audit, tax, consulting and financial advisory services. The award recognized our environmental efforts for how we integrate and balance economic growth, social equity and environmental management into how we do business.
  • The American Forest & Paper Association's 2005 Business Leadership Recycling Award. The AF&PA deemed our paper recovery and recycling program the best in the large business category after considering the educational, innovative and cost-effective programs and partnerships we employ to ensure we're capturing as much recyclable paper waste from our operations as possible and in the highest grades possible for recycling.
  • Quad/Graphics was named a 2005 Sustainable Standard-Setter by the Rainforest Alliance, a New York-based not-for-profit organization. Calling Quad/Graphics a leader in the emerging certified-sustainable sector, the Rainforest Alliance lauded the scope of our environmental initiatives, which go beyond just Forest Stewardship Council certification to include sophisticated recycling operations, best available emissions control technology, and extensive energy and fuel conservation programs.
  • The Clean Air Recognition from the Wisconsin Partners for Clean Air (WPCA) and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR). The award is issued to Wisconsin companies that are making a positive impact on the environment through improved air quality.
  • A state and national Climate Wise Partner Achievement Award for outstanding innovation, leadership, results and planning in reducing greenhouse gas emissions through cost-effective energy management.

How Green Is Your Printer?

Quad/Graphics has prepared specific questions that should be included as part of every request for proposal (RFP) to suppliers – especially printers. The questions are based on our decades of sustainability experience.
