Launched months before a divot-riddled 2008 by independent publishers Steve and Kristi Gomen, Golf Fitness Magazine targets a select group: golfers who prefer the holistic approach, adding nutrition and total body fitness into their performance mojo. “Even in this worst of times, there’s still strong interest in our topic,” says an upbeat Steve Gomen. In fact, his magazine, which started out as a quarterly two years ago, now has a bimonthly printing schedule with Quad/Graphics.So how does Quad help improve GFM’s game? “Quad’s economies of scale, flexibility and service are far superior to other printers we’ve dealt with,” says Mr. Gomen. One notable recession buster: The Gomens have utilized firm bundling, which saves them about 60 percent in postage. With firm bundling, tight and secure strapping holds together several issues for delivery to one address. In GFM’s case, the prime niches are doctors’ offices, spas and elective surgery centers. “We rely on Quad – they perform as a kind of circulation manager, which we don’t have,” says Mr. Gomen.Sums up Mr. Gomen: “We wanted a partner to help us grow.
