Paper that Shines Marketers looking for ways to extend the “view time” of their catalogs or ads have a dramatic new option available from Quad/Graphics. Holographic metalized paper is a new paper substrate that produces an eye-catching shimmering, 3-D effect to enhance the look and perceived value of almost any product when used for a cover or ad. The paper comes in a variety of patterns, from "striped mirror" to stars, snowflakes, bubbles and multiple line patterns. These types of effects (movement, depth and brightness) cannot be reproduced using conventional print techniques. Quad has produced numerous printed materials using this paper including catalog covers for Fingerhut. The paper is available from 60-pound text to 12-point board stock for sheetfed printing. Because the paper is lacquer-coated, it requires special ink. Some metalized paper is completely biodegradable, which can make it an important environmental alternative to foil laminates.
