Print and Deliver Only What’s Ordered

Specializing in inspirational and faith-based content, HarperCollins Christian Publishing and its Zondervan and Thomas Nelson banners are highly recognized brands in Christian publishing. Zondervan, a leading Bible publisher and Christian communications company, has been part of HarperCollins Publishers since the late 1980s. After the acquisition of Thomas Nelson in 2012, HarperCollins Christian Publishing was formed, and is one of the world’s leading sources for Bibles, inspirational books, academic resources, church and small-group curriculum, audio and digital content, and live events.

In today’s marketplace, book publishers are faced with the constant challenge of aligning production with demand for a wide range of titles and audiences. Order too many, and the result is excess and unsold inventory. Order too few, and the result is lost sales. And when demand is not sufficient to print books using conventional offset book presses, how can publishers take advantage of new digital print solutions that allow for fast and efficient shorter-run production?

HarperCollins Christian Publishing turned to us to automate its front-end ordering as well as back-end fulfillment and distribution to ensure shorter runs are not cost-prohibitive.

Inventory has been reduced, yet volumes have increased, thanks to our automated response system.

As an industry leader in the application of new digital print solutions, we are seasoned experts in the related front-end and back-end systems that streamline the entire process from order to delivery. Our digital book printing team put together a total end-to-end solution that enables HarperCollins to maximize efficiencies in the critical production quantity range of 100-2,500.

Our solution includes a sophisticated and customized front-end EDI automated inventory and replenishment system. This monitors inventories on a daily basis and places orders for digital book printing automatically based on preset inventory-level metrics. In addition, we provided the industry’s newest digital print and finishing systems for printing and binding to order within a 3-5 day production window. We also optimized back-end distribution to get product to market faster while keeping inventories and their related costs as low as possible.

Based on our solution’s success to date, HarperCollins is adding more titles to its program and increasing overall volume as the benefits of short-run digital book printing continue to grow. Titles that had gone out of print have been revived, and those that likely would have been discontinued in the past have new life and can stay “in print” within a system that more easily accommodates shorter runs and smaller demand. Inventory has been reduced, yet volumes have increased thanks to our automated, fast-response system. Automation has helped keep costs low while shortening turnaround times in production and fulfillment. The takeaway: Our system helps HarperCollins Christian Publishing excel in serving the needs of the Christian content marketplace.

End-to-end digital print solutions allow for cost-efficient, shorter-run production cycles that align inventory with demand.
